Scoring 18+ points on the Dionysian scale of 20, this 12% alcohol Saint-Julien Bordeaux is nearing its peak. The 1986 Chateau Saint-Pierre is a Fourth Growth Grand Cru of the 1855 Class. It cost $24 back then.

It’s still ruby, with dark fruits and wood with a hint of leather. The wine is very soft with balanced tannin and it has a long aftertaste.  It made an excellent food wine served with beef tenderloin. We ate it all before I could get a photo. Sorry.

All today’s Grand Cru Bordeaux cost too much, but this one was under $20 back then. It is still a good buy today.

The Bordeaux from the village of Saint-Julien  are the best way to start your study of Bordeaux. They are the easiest to love quickly. In vino veritas.
