This 16% alcohol desert wine was made for Popes, hence the name of the 1995  Vigna del Papa Vinsanto del Chianti. It scored 17 points on the 20-point Dionysian scale. It’s produced and bottled by Fattoria Villa La Selva.

Few dessert wines can beat this Vinsanto from Chianti in Tuscany.

These wines are usually drunk much younger, but I love to age them and add complexity to the caramel smokey nose that’s filled with raisin and dried fruit aromas. It’s best served with biscotti, before any expresso is drunk, but it can be sipped along side most after dinner non-alcoholic drinks. It cost nearly $24 back when it was released, but was well worth it.

The “wine of saints” is made in a number of places but the Tuscan examples can not be beat. In vino veritas.
