With a higher than normal, 14.7% alcohol, the 2007 Obsidian Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon scored 16+ points on the Dionysian scale of a possible 20. It cost under $24  and even though it didn’t need all that alcohol, it scored well. It was balanced, had a long aftertaste, and continued to open up for more than an hour after it was poured.

Obisdian is black glassy volcanic soil and the wine did reflect some of the terroir.

The wine comes from the Red Hills of Lake County above Napa. It’s from one of the higher vineyards in the Mayacamas Mountains.

Mayacamas means “cry of the mountain lion” in the local native Indian language. The wine had black cherry, blackberry and plum. At 13 years old, it’s about at peak and will hold well another five to seven years with little further improvement. Drink now.   I’ve only been to Lake County a few times and think it has great potential.  In Vino Veritas.
