A charming wine from Mendoza, Argentina made from 50% Malbec and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2013 CARO from Domaines Barons De Rothschild (Lafite)  had 14.5% alcohol, my usual maximum for a food wine.

It cost under $20, and scored a fine 16+ points on the 20-point Dionysian scale. It was ruby with a lighter edge. It had black fruit aromas on its nose, and the wine is well balanced with refreshing acids. It’s an excellent food-wine.

At only six years old, it’s basic fruits dominate without any complex tobacco scents. It will age easily another decade, and is enjoyable with any meat or pasta dish.

The CARO was made to pair with classic red meat from Argentina. I’d suggest a case buy to sample one every six months. In Vino Veritas.
