I love old wines, but many times a fresh young wine better suits the meal. Scoring 17 Dionysian points from its scale of 20, as close to Gold Medel range as you can get, the 2014 San Angelo Pinot Grigio from Castello Banfi in Tuscany, cost under $15 and is a great food wine.

It has tropical fruits mixed with lime citrus. It has medium weight and a lingering aftertaste to refresh the palate for the next forkful of food.

As Pinot Grigio became very popular in America, too many producers over-cropped their vineyards and are making diluted wine. with little but some lemon notes. However, this Banfi example is classic, and traditional in its balance and fruit flavors and proves it’s a food wine.

At 12.5% alcohol, Banfi is making what smart wine-drinkers are looking for; a food friendly low alcohol balanced wine. If you’ve left Pinot Grigio, try this as soon as possible. In vino veritas.
