Costing under $20, with 12.5% alcohol and scoring 15 points on the Dionysian scale, the 2016 Gruner Veltliner Lake Erie from the South Shore Wine Company of Mazza Vineyards was enjoyable. It was fuller, heavier than Austrian examples, but smelled the same.  It was almost as good as New Jersey’s Bellview Gruner Veltliner, one of America’s best examples of this grape and wine.

It was served with a fish course and drunk along side the Bellview with some Dionysian Members. All agreed with my conclusion.

The Lake Erie area is ideal for growing this grape and I expect to see the wine improve each year as the vines mature. There are many interesting wines grown in all 50 states now and it’s worth trying something different once in a while.  In Vino Veritas.
