The 2006 Saint Aubin 1er Cru Les Murgers De Dents De Chiens from Vincent Girardin is at peak. This nine-year-old wine is 13.5% alcohol and was purchased just two years ago when the wine was already aging too quickly. It has a deep gold color, reminiscent of some 20 year-old wines when cellared properly. It has a charming bouquet (older wines develop bouquet, while younger wines simply have an aroma) of rich butter, vanilla and some tropical fruits. It is balanced and went very well with the lobster, shrimp and scallop dish I had at Tre Famigilia in Haddonfield, New Jersey last night. It’s  an excellent BYOB.  (856) 429-1447 for reservations. We had four different wines with the four course meal, and the Saint Aubin was the standout.

Like all white Burgundy, this Chardonnay was medium-bodied and scored an excellent 17+ points on the Dionysian Scale of 20 possible points.

I like to buy wines on release and age them myself in a cold dark space to prevent rapid aging. This wine has been stored too warm; maybe in  a warehouse or wine shop where temperatures are 70 degrees or higher, for too long a period. That’s why it aged too quickly and already had a major color change.

The wine reminded me more of a Meursault than from the village of Saint Aubin, but I got it for under $20 on sale, and I’ll enjoy the remaining bottles this year. In vino veritas.
