What an excellent surprise! The 2012 Barovo Vineyards red from the Tikves region in Macedonia scored a fine 16 points on the Dionysian scale of a possible 20. It has14.5% alcohol and is made with ancient Kratosija 85%, and Vranec 35% grapes.

It’s purple red, very young and filled with a complex mix of red and black fruits, subtle oak and some herb-spice notes. The hint of black pepper reminded me of a light Zinfandel. It should cost about $15 and is a wine you can age for a decade at least.

You’ll have to ask for Macedonian wine. This one is grown on the mountains just above Greece in southern Macedonia.

It was matched to an old world recipe for bean soup. The flavors intertwined and made a rainy night feel much better. In vino veritas.

A bean-based soup with unique old world grapes was a perfect match.
