With  13.5% alcohol, the maximum Sauvignon Blanc should ever be, and costing under  $18, the Sunbird 2015 Sauvignon Blanc  from Koelenof, South Africa, scored an excellent 17+ points on the Dionysian scale of a possible 20. Only the best Loire Valley wines score as well.

This wine is a Sancerre clone. It pairs well with shellfish and seafood , but is also very nice with many white meats.  It’s a wine to buy by the case for  your spring and summer drinking.

Served with fresh North Atlantic Cod, Greek olives, white rice, and fresh New Jersey spinach, the Simonsig Sauvignon Blanc was the perfect wine to marry with the meal.

The 2015 Simonsig Sauvignon Blanc has white grapefruit, distinct gooseberry, some tropical notes, and a hint of green fig on its nose. The wine was kept on its lees for nearly six months, and it is balanced  with a long finish. This is a wine to drink upon release and will be enjoyable for at least two to four years.

The Malan family has made wine in South Africa since 1688 and the wine is named after the inspiring view of the Simonsberg Mountain.

In a blind tasting, you’d think it was a French Loire Valley white. Try it. You’ll enjoy it. In vino veritas.
