At a decade old, the 2009 Lang des Caillous Vacqueyras from the Rhone Valley, scored an excellent 18 Dionysian points out of 20. With 14% alcohol, and costing under $25, the lesser know Rhone red showed balance, pepper notes, spice and light red fruits. It was smooth and had a long clean aftertaste.
As Vacqueyras becomes better known, its cost will go up. They age very well, and a case or two put down right now will pay off greatly by 2030.
Red Rhones are mostly blends of a number of spice-filled grapes. The all make great food wines. The Domaine le Lang des Caillous makes an excellent example. In Vino Veritas.
