Scoring 17+ Dionysian points out of 20 and costing under $20 back then, this 29 year-old Spanish red from Ribera Del Duero was at its peak. The 1988 Pesquera was a Crianza in its ranking and was a numbered bottle.

The wine held its color well, had smokey, spicy, cherry on its nose ,and had a long finish and aftertaste. It is a great food wine.

Steelhead trout, long-grain rice and broccoli rape demanded a mature red wine that softened over the years. Burgundy would have also worked.

Some years back I had a roasted lamb three hour luncheon with winemaker Alejandro Fernandez to made this wine. The Pesquera is now considered a Grand Cur for the area!  They’ve gotten expensive but are still well worth it. Lay a few done for a decade and live like Spanish royalty. In Vino Veritas.
