The 375 ml of the 1922 Mackensie Vintage Port was 19% alcohol, scored 18+ points on the Dionysian scale,  and cost only $29 in 1973. The 98 year-old product of Portugal was bottled and shipped from London. It had two inches of sediment. It was amber ruby with remarkable reddish tones. (I know, I should have kept it two more years)  It was all smoky cherry, herbs, and had a long, long soft aftertaste. The photo shows it darker than it is.

I found it by mistake, It wasn’t with my other Porto, but resting beneath some older Bordeaux. A very special wine for unique times.

Older wines have a special complexity that’s hard to put into words. but when I show one, I’m trying to encourage younger people to cellar some vinous treasures for their old age, or even late middle age. I opened one of these at the Dionysian Gathering’s Gala Midnight Port Party in 1998. This one was better. In Vino Veritas.
