At 45 years old, the 1974 Fossi Chianti Classico Riserva was remarkable! Cost under $9 back then, it has 12.5% alcohol, and scored 18+ points on the Dionysian scale of a possible 20.

An orange amber edge showed its age. It still had fruit, with spice and earthy smoky notes. It was smooth and continued to open after decanting for half an hour.

Served with grilled rabbit loin and basic veggies. I seldom see Fossi wines around any more. This was the older style that still permitted some white grapes in the blend.

The wine was perfectly balanced, was clean and smooth. The aftertaste was long and the flavor enhanced every bite of the meal.

The ’74 was my son’s birth year, so it was opened during his recent visit home. Age some wines for your children and grandchildren. It will give them something to talk about after you’re gone.  In Vino Veritas.
