The 1990 Wehlener Klosterberg Riesling Spatlese from Selbach-Oster in the Mosel Region of Germany had 8.5% alcohol. It cost about $10 then, and scored 29 points on the Dionysian scale of 20 ! It’ll say, “Mosel-Sar-Ruwer” on the labels noting all three rivers in that region.

Flowers and wet stone showed from the deep golden wine. At 30 years old, it is at peak, and it will hold so for another decade. All should know that the top Riesling wines age as well or better than Bordeaux.

Served with egg custard, but it could have been dessert all by itself.

Spatlese is sweet, but not as sweet as Auslese Rieslings. I use to drink cases of them and honestly plan to go back to drinking and collecting more German Riesling. You should too. Their dry food worthy style, “trocken” wines will pair with any food a white wines helps. In Vino Veritas.
