This 14.2% Meritage from Columbia Valley in Washington State, cost under $40 and scored 16 Dionysian points. The 2009 Genesis Meritage  is produced and bottled by Hogue Cellars.

Meritage means Bordeaux-style blend and this wine is 47% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Malbec. It’s big. Black fruits and oak aromas, and big tannins are face forward. It needs meat or hard cheeses.

A spicy cocoa flavor lingers over dark plum. It’s made to go with dinner. Decant first.

At eight years old, it’s just beginning to open. Give it another five years to peak and it will hold for eight years after that. Enjoy.  In vino veritas.
