The 12.6% alcohol 2013 Hawk Haven Pinot Grigio New Jersey wine from Rio Grande, in Cape May County, New Jersey’s AVA, the “Outer Coastal Plain,” scored 13+ points on the 20 Dionysian Scale.
It’s a pleasant drink, but it has too much residual sugar for a food wine. Slight citrus and a short aftertaste makes it a fine commercial wine and good for afternoon sipping, but it didn’t help the Potpourri of Fish that included sweet patio fries, fresh Jersey peas and three fish: salmon, cod and halibut done with capers, pumpkin seeds, basil and lemon juice.
The wine is produced and bottled by Hawk Haven, but not grown there. There are no faults in this wine, just made in a tourist style. Try their Chardonnay. In vino veritas.
The three fish dinner needed a much higher acid wine to enhance the flavors. The Hawk Haven should be drunk without food; enjoy it by itself.
