At 20% alcohol, and just 29 years old, the 1991 Warre’s Vintage Porto, bottled in 1993 scored 19 Dionysia points. It cost below $45 back then. After decanting out almost a half cup of sediment, the ruby red wine was filled with cherry and spice. It kissed your lips. The applewood-burning fireplace may have helped.

For 350 years, Warre’s has been making great Porto. The 1991 is rated at 99 points on some scales and this vintage is a 19,5 on the Dionysian scale of a possible 20.

Wines like this demand thoughtful conversation and Dionysians Vince and Susie Winterling along with Joan Ardito all contributed insights into its spice, soft flowing river of deep red sweetness and how it paired with dark chocolate and blue cheese. The wine was worth the wait; I expect the 2016’s to be very similar.  Get some.  In Vino Veritas.
