The 1999 Symmetry, made by Rodney Strong, from the Alexander Valley has 13.9% alcohol, cost about $55, and at 20 years old, scored 18 gold medal points on the Dionysian scale of a possible 20.
It was decanted just prior to drinking. It was ruby red, and had black fruit aromas with a healthy dose of spice and wood. It was smooth and balanced and was one of the best Californian wines I’ve had all year.
I served it with a meat laced pasta dish and it was beautiful. Sadly, it was my last one. I will try some newer one and age them if the alcohol hasn’t gotten any higher. In Vino Veritas.
