With 13.5% alcohol, the 2009 Clos La Coutale Cahors scored 17 points on the Dionysian scale of a possible 20. It cost just under $20 and was made with 80% Malbec and 20% Merlot.  The area is 120 miles east of Bordeaux. In the city of Cahors, Malbec is called “Auxerrois.”

They quote Thomas Jefferson on the back label: “Good wine is a necessity of life for me.” So true. This wine can age at least 20 years or more. and is made for big meats and cheeses. It had loads of black fruit aromas and was already smooth, but had enough tannin to last a few decades. In vino veritas.

Malbec is the heart and soul of all Cahors wines. It’s what Argentina tries to imitate.
