Under $18, with 13.5% alcohol and scoring 16+ quality points on the Dionysian scale of a possible 20, the 2009 Yalumba Viognier, from South Australia, was an easy drink.

Strong honeysuckle, citrus lemon peal and lychee aromas provide a delightful white to enjoy with or without food.

I like Viognier more and more, and even though it’s not the Rhone style, it provides a long clean finish. The wine is well balanced, and at eight years old, it’s perfect.

Fresh home made crab cake, asparagus and garden peas helped highlight the wine’s fruity flavors. If drunk on release, it would not have shown as well.

This style comes into its own at five years old and holds another five years.  I’ll get more. In Vino Veritas.
