The 2013  Basa scores 15 points (now and for the past four vintages) and is an everyday Spanish white for, or prior to dinner. Rating is on the Dionysian 20-point scale.  Costing under $10, and scoring so high, it’s a must buy! I cellar a case for 3 to 5 years, and they do develop additional complexity over the standard citrus and basic mineralality. It finishes very clean.

The grapes for the Rueda area, where the wine comes from, are usually Verdejo and Viura (which is really the Macabeo grape, called Viura in that region) and together they create a delightful white food-wine. It’s refreshing.

Grilled onions & zucchini, baked chicken crusted with bread and nuts, salad (use lemon juice with the oil, not vinegar) and we tested it with the pasta: it paired with everything.

It’s great with seafood, chicken and even pasta with a white or light red sauce. Dionysian, Joe Ardito, and I always keep it in our cellars. It’s a must for BYOB’s because it matches so many foods.  In vino veritas.
