The 2014 Elbling Trocken (dry) from the German Mosel, scored 16 points  (silver medal range) on the Dionysian scale of 20. Outstanding. Bottled by Weingut Furst, and a delightful 11% alcohol, this German white wine is a must for every day drinking even if you’ve never heard of this grape!

It is clean with citrus and lime zest; steely-mineral with high, but refreshing acid. It paired perfectly with the flounder dish and can be used with hors d’oeuvres, salads, shellfish, and yes, oysters, and in the $10 range, it’s perfect because it comes in a 1 liter bottle, not a 750ml.  Imported by David Bowler Wine in New York. Tell your retailer to find it.

This unique grape from brought to the Mosel region by the Romans 2,000 years ago and only a handful of growers work with it today. It’s planted in the Muschelkalk soils of an ancient seabed.  In vino veritas.
